I moved to this studio just over 5 years ago now. It has bright light and air conditioning! I've been doing a lot of work here and really enjoy my colleagues. We are a smallish building of 8 artists but we are mighty! :)

I spent the last half of August painting a large electric box in the town of Natick, MA. My design was chosen! It was a lot of fun!

The old studio building at Fountain Street Studios is in pretty rough shape (according to the building commissioner and the fire department). I have served on the Board there for 2 years and created many new friends. Now the building is going for sale because it will be too costly to fix. In the mean time, I had an opportunity to rent in a smaller building with just 8 artists. Half the space for the same price (but safe). I took it. I just finished moving and will start working again soon once I organize my things. (This photo is of the last thing I painted there (drip, drip): silk scarves...I love how silk paint flows onto silk). Good bye Fountain Street Studios! After nearly 3 years, I will miss you and your high ceilings!

The butterflies and flowers and garden that I illustrated for Dr. Finn's Games are complete and the kickstarter campaign is underway. This is a good way to pick up a copy of the game for a low price and shipping included in the US.

I am doing an illustrating job for Dr. Finn's Games. It will be a card game with images of butterflies and flowers. I am so very excited about this. Look for the game in the Spring of 2016!

I have been having such a fun time using fabric dye/paints and resist cassava paste to create these beauties! Please have a look!

Inspired by my birthday flowers. I really enjoyed the process...from drawing from a squeeze tube of thick white paint to laying in the colors.

What a great day June 1st was! I sold 10 pieces of art and met a bunch of nice people. I will definitely do the Art Walk again next year (this was my first year). My family and I even made the newspaper! "Click for more information."

early March 2014:
Painted this yesterday, large 24" X 30" on canvas (acrylic paint). I think it is in reaction to having just worked small and thickly on the observed sunflowers. This large painting is thin and loose and abstract. I'm not sure if it is done yet or not...

Isn't there a physics law like that? For every action there is a reaction....or something like that. It's like that in life. It's like that on the micro scale and on the macro scale. Think about electron activity. Think about large systems in our universe. Think about everything in between. Balance and distribution.

I am reminded of a story my mother told me. I do remember asking the question too. In 6th grade, we studied gravity in science. I raised my hand asking that if gravity existed then could there be such thing as antigravity? The teacher reported me to my mother as a questioning thinker. That's a good thing. Gravity/antigravity....action/reaction....yin/yang, isn't it?

thick again

This winter, there was a call for art at MIT representing astronomy and astrophysics concepts. Who doesn't look up at night (or even the day time) and wonder? Supernovae (and black holes) are definitely abstract, conceptual, and interesting. The astrophysics department at MIT made something incredible and unique happen....I spent 45 minutes on the phone with Dr. Castro who is a leading expert in the supernova field. I really wanted information about color in supernovae, but the conversation lead astray with my questioning if the effects of a supernova could be detected before the visual, light years later. He said that there can be gravitational effects on the time/space grid in the universe and detectors are being worked on for this! Indeed particles from supernovae may be able to be detected before we can "see" the supernova in a telescope light years away. Interesting....

About color: would only look like variations of bright white light in our visual range. Other frequencies detect other colors. (And in general, blue is used in scientific diagrams to symbolize activity....This is interesting because in art, we always think of red as an active color).

Anyhow, the image is what I came up with for a painting. The idea is something like this:
Represents Life and Death Cycle of Stars. Blue iron core is exploding and collapsing but shown as a blooming flower. Hydrogen clouds may go on to become new stars. Gravitational waves altering the space time grid. From the death of a star, new star life and elements that sustain life "bloom." I tried to paint the supernova as if it were collapsing (death) but at the same time blooming (life). It is called "Bloom: Supernova and Shockwave Expansion."

....they are tricky to paint. Sure you can make a circle and some petals, but when you really look...there is a geometric spiral design in the center. New day, another attempt.

March 11, 2014: Today I just kept layering paint on a small canvas board (poor thing!). I enjoyed painting tulips recently, so thought I'd buy and try looking at a sunflower. My interest in observing the sunflower lasted about 5 minutes before I was abstracting and seeing interesting things, and I just kept going. I am reminded of the book "The Interaction of Color" by Itten. Color is so relative to what is next to it. It's amazing to watch and get absorbed by the changes. Each layer creates a new interaction and look.

I am also reminded of a palette knife painting my mother did in probably the 1960's. We grew up with that painting on a wall...so thick!
